After two days of the Wanderers Test there is little to chose between South and Australia, but scores of 266 and 296 only tell half the story of a match that, thus far, has been just as exciting as last week’s ding-dong encounter at Newlands.
Having been 241-4, South Africa threw away their last six wickets on day 1, but as in Cape Town Australia somehow managed to out-do their hosts in the ineptitude stakes, slipping from 174-0 to 296 all out. Shane Watson and Phil Hughes aside, this was another insipid performance from a line-up that continues to flatter to deceive.
This latest dramatic change in fortunes has once again given Betfair punters – at least those opportunists with an eye for value – the opportunity to win big. When Australia’s openers were motoring along this afternoon you could get odds as long as 17.5 on a South African victory, and there’ll be a few fingers crossed tomorrow that the Proteas build on today’s fightback.
After what happened at Newlands. It’s no wonder that the home side are now marginal favourites, but don’t be surprised if it’s all change again tomorrow!
