Mike Procter and Clive Rice were not only two of the finest allrounders in cricket’s history – they were also two of the fastest bowlers ever to represent the Proteas. Denied lengthy international careers because of South Africa’s apartheid regime, both men instead enjoyed incredible success at first-class level and performed with distinction during Kerry Packer’s Word Series Cricket in the 70s and 80s.
As part of our packed fast bowling special, AOC’s Ed Davis and Chris Knight caught up with the two South African legends to find out what it takes to bowl pace successfully at the highest level. Sadly, there’s only so much even we can cram into a 100-page magazine, so here are a few choice lines that you won’t find in our current issue – available in WHSmiths and all good newsagents now – to enjoy…

Clive Rice [pictured above]: Clearly over the years, fast bowlers have won matches, but then you do get some spinners – like Shane Warne, say – who win matches on their own.
