A national survey of more than 1,000 people has revealed that the exploits of England’s all-conquering Test team have put a smile on the face of the British public.
The poll, conducted by cricket charity Chance to Shine and England sponsors Brit Insurance, has shown that sporting success like England’s emphatic whitewash of India leads to a “happier” and more “united” country.
Six out of ten people surveyed say that English sporting victories make them “personally happier” and over a third believe that sport “unites a country that frequently doesn’t feel united” and “makes the normally reserved British go out and celebrate”.
Chance to Shine chief executive Wasim Khan agreed with the polls conclusions: “National sporting success can really put a spring in the country’s step, especially when it’s in the doldrums, and inspire children to take up sport. Britain needs cheering up after the past month, and our young people need positive role models like Andrew Strauss.”
Chance to Shine supported by Brit Insurance’ aims to bring cricket to two million children in a third of state schools by 2015
