Join Lydia Greenway’s Festival In Spain

The Lydia Greenway Cricket Festival is a great opportunity for girls up to the age of 15 to improve their cricket in gorgeous surroundings. Find out more.

In her playing days Lydia Greenway was one of England’s most successful female cricketers, making more than 200 appearances for her country and winning two Ashes series and two world trophies. In an international career spanning 14 years she scored 2,554 ODI runs, placing her fourth on England’s all-time list. She was also regarded as one of the finest fielders ever to grace the game.

Since announcing her retirement from international cricket last June, Lydia’s attention has turned to coaching and she has been sharing her knowledge and expertise with the next generation of girls hoping to follow in her footsteps.

As a Smile Group Travel ambassador, Lydia will be delivering a new and exciting festival of cricket at La Manga Club in Spain this October, offering coaching masterclasses and competitive matches at new, world-class facilities.

“My passion is coaching girls and getting them into cricket,” says Lydia. “There’s such a demand for opportunities and to keep up the development of the game. With the growth of the game and the opportunity that there is for young girls playing cricket now, we can go into schools and clubs and say to them, ‘Actually you can make a career out of playing cricket’. That’s something which a few years ago we didn’t ever think would be possible. It’s about trying to offer as much opportunity as possible and the big one for me is providing that with female role models delivering the coaching.

“What Smile is providing goes beyond wanting to produce the next Charlotte Edwards or Meg Lanning, it’s about providing a holistic life experience for young people. Playing abroad teaches you about different cultures, you meet people from different backgrounds, and it provides you with challenges you don’t come up against everyday at home. This really is a special opportunity, and it is something I feel extremely excited and lucky to be a part of. I want to equip girls with better cricket skills but more importantly I want to develop them as people.”

Graeme Walker, director at Smile Group Travel, shares Lydia’s determination to make cricket accessible to as many girls as possible. “The overriding ambition for Smile is to help develop the game,” says Graeme. “We want to help introduce girls to the game and also to help them develop. We subscribe to the old adage: sport for all. Really experienced coaches like Lydia and her team will ensure that the camp is equally relevant and challenging for elite players and also young girls that are just starting to learn about the game.

The Lydia Greenway Cricket Festival is open to girls of all standards up to the age of 15. The camp will cater to full squads and also individuals, who will then be placed into squads and coached by Lydia and her team.
