9. 186 v India, 2nd Test, Mumbai, 2012

The story

England were subjugated and humiliated in Ahmedabad; their batting rudderless and hopeless. In Mumbai they were dominant – Pietersen leading the charge. In the first Test he was clean-bowled on two occasions by left-armer Pragyan Ojha and the knives were, as ever, being sharpened. Making a mockery of the knife-sharpeners, as is his wont, KP unleashed himself and unfurled all the shots. Ignoring the dustbowl of a surface he regularly peppered the boundaries. Here was a man on a mission, and it brought England back into the series.

The shot

He moved to a century with a reverse sweep – which was good enough – but followed it up with an inside-out six over extra cover off the bowling of Ojha (2.20 into the video). It was, to use elevated cricketing parlance, a bloody ludicrous shot.

The quote

“The way we bowled on the first day was fantastic and then the way Kevin took the game away from India – to get an 80-run lead was vital. It was a fantastic innings and great to watch from the other end.” Alastair Cook

The scorecard

India 327 (Pujara 135; Panesar 5-129) & 142 (Gambhir 65; Panesar 6-81) lost to England 413 (Pietersen 186, Cook 122) & 58-0 by 10 wickets
