REVIEW

Stop all the clocks. Hold back the night. The B3 is here and it’s after your wallet. The clue’s in the name – why go with the B3 Guttersnipe, B3 Chinwag or B3 Flux Capacitor when you can go with B3 Cricket, followed by a simple number? It says it all. No frills. Business time. Those digits, incidentally, represent each bat’s personal reference number, meaning that every model can be reproduced, to the very last specification, by those geniuses at the B3 workshop. All in all, you could do worse than drop those guys a line and ask them to rustle up a 5222. Why? Because its combination of tight grains, chunky handle, elegant carvings (a legacy of the B3 boys’ time at Gunn & Moore) and top-end English willow delivers a blade of exceptional style and class. “It’s not necessarily going to be good for someone who wants to slog it a long, long way,” says the touch player Rob Key, lovingly. In other words: look elsewhere, cultureless oiks! The real thing is right here, right now. Extraordinary.

Tight grain, two tones, picks up light, good thick edges. Feels very well balanced, so you can whip the bat around and use your wrists easily. This looks like a really good piece of wood. The middle pings – Rob Key

Nice tight grains. Big bit of dark wood, big bit of light wood. Rounded bottom, lovely large middle. It’s hard but with a bit of give as well – Ben Allon

I always look for two-tone bats with tight grains. If I was to be overly critical about it I’d like the sweet spot just a hint lower but it’s an absolute gun of a middle – it pinged off. Just what every player wants – Graham Napier
