We’re more than halfway through the season, and if I’m totally honest it has felt very stop-start.
I haven’t been playing white ball cricket for Northants this year, and with the Twenty20 Cup occupying a massive chunk of the season, there was a period where I wasn’t actually playing much cricket. The upside is that, with just nine Championship games under my belt, my body is actually in much better nick than it has been in previous seasons, whereas a lot of county bowlers who are playing all forms of the game are likely to be suffering heavily from fatigue. Hopefully I can capitalise on my fitness and produce my best form and help the club push for promotion in the four-day game.
There is little doubt though that the next few weeks of the season are going to be all go. Obviously everyone at the club is delighted that we’ve booked our place for Twenty20 Finals Day at Edgbaston, but we also have the last ever Pro40 tournament to look forward to. Throw in the fact that there is the small matter of England and Australia battling it out in the Ashes, and it is clear that there is much for the avid, Northants-inclined cricket fan to be excited about.
I’ve certainly enjoyed following all the action this summer during my two or three ‘days off’. The reason I say ‘days off’ is that I have spent a lot of this time in the gym, or helping the club out with the odd hospitality box appearance and some local radio commentary. I’m not sure how qualified I am to commentate on Twenty20, having not played a game in four years! Still, it was a pretty enjoyable (albeit scary) experience.

It was 30 years before the club's staff realised they had locked Wigley in the studio
I’m itching to get my whites back on and start bowling some overs and (hopefully) taking wickets for Northants. This has the potential to be great season for the club, but all we can do is get our heads down and take it one game at a time. The English season is definitely a marathon, not a sprint, so we know we have a ton of challenges ahead of us.
